The Office of Service Learning in the Youth Area of Coslada
The entrance plaza of the Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente Primary and Infant Education Center in Coslada has been the scene of an exciting event. This event marked the completion of the ‘Corazones Solidarios’ Service Learning project promoted by this school, in collaboration with the ApS Office of the Youth Department of the Coslada City Council.
The ‘Corazones Solidarios’ project involved organizing a campaign to raise funds to purchase fabrics. The aim of this acquisition was to make heart-shaped cushions to help women who have undergone a mastectomy as part of their breast cancer treatment.
These ‘Corazones Solidarios’ cushions are very useful for these individuals because when placed in the armpit, they prevent the arm from rubbing against the operated area.
It is worth noting that many entities participated in the project, including the Hospital del Henares. An emotional event held at the school marked the end of a program in which various associations collaborated, leading to the distribution of these cushions to entities and hospitals in various parts of Madrid, as well as to the Spanish Cancer Association (AECC) for distribution among women in need.
A Resounding Success
The success of this ApS project was such that the fundraising for purchasing materials exceeded all expectations. This allowed for the allocation of ‘Corazones Solidarios’ to other hospital centers in the Madrid region, such as Alcalá de Henares and Arganda del Rey, in addition to those at the Hospital del Henares.
The Mayor of Coslada, Ángel Viveros, was present at the closing of this project alongside the councilors for Youth, Iván López, and Education, José Sousa, and took the opportunity to praise «everything that the youngest teach us.»
«We must listen to them because in a matter as sensitive as health, they are also capable of showing us the way to overcome problems, in this case, through solidarity,» he added. The mayor also highlighted the «work of the ApS office of the Coslada City Council, the management of the Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente Primary and Infant Education Center, all the entities that made this project a success, the parents of the students, and, of course, these children who are an example to follow. To all, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.»
The conclusion of the Corazones Solidarios ApS program promoted by the Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente Primary and Infant Education Center was first published on the Coslada City Council website.
