This year, 289 drawings have been received.
The Councilor for Health and Consumption, Rubén Aguilar, has awarded the prizes for the XV Drawing Contest of World No Tobacco Day, which is commemorated every year on May 31. The award ceremony took place at the Margarita Nelken cultural center, where the 30 finalists, accompanied by their teachers and families, were present.
The first prize was awarded to Iván Irún Herrera from CEIP Gonzalo de Berceo. The second prize went to Romaysae Essaidi from CEIP San Pablo, while the third prize was given to Carla Tárrega Gandia from CEIP El Olivo.
World No Tobacco Day was established by the WHO to highlight the risks that this habit poses to health and to promote effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption, which is the second leading global cause of mortality and the primary preventable epidemic.
The Health Department, through the Center for Addiction Treatment (CTA) and as part of the Addiction Prevention Program, conducted a sensitization and prevention session on tobacco consumption with 6th-grade students from schools in Coslada. This session, called «Say no to tobacco,» was led by the psychologist from CTA, along with Health Agents from 1st grade at Miguel Catalán Institute.
Subsequently, the «No Smoke, No Tobacco» drawing contest was held. This year, ten schools participated in the session, with a total of 432 students, and 289 drawings were received. The drawings will be exhibited from May 21 to June 2, 2025, on the ground floor of the Margarita Nelken cultural center and from June 3 to June 9 at the Hospital del Henares.
Councilor Rubén Aguilar emphasized that «in Coslada, we are convinced that educating and empowering our children is the best tool to prevent tobacco consumption. Additionally, the drawing contest ‘No Smoke, No Tobacco’ allows our students to creatively express their ideas and raise awareness among families and society about the harms of tobacco consumption.»
He added that «seeing how children get involved in this cause reminds us that the future is in their hands and that, with the support of this City Council, we can build a smoke-free Coslada.»
The central theme proposed by the WHO to commemorate World No Tobacco Day in 2025 is «Unmask its appeal,» which will provide a platform for young people worldwide to demand that the tobacco industry stop targeting them with harmful products.
Young people worldwide are calling on governments to adopt policies that protect them from the manipulative practices of tobacco and related industries, including the relentless marketing of their dangerous products through social media and streaming platforms.
